1. How can I find books at the Ikeda Library?

You can use the library catalog to search by keyword, title, author, or subject to find books held by the library. You are also welcome to browse our collection. Circulating books are located on the third floor of the Library building. Reference material is located in the second floor reference area. Material is shelved using the Library of Congress (LC) classification system

The library catalog can be found on the library website:
http://library.soka.edu/search/w

2. How can I find magazines or journals?

Print magazines, newspapers, and journals are located on the lower floor of the Ikeda Library. The titles of all those items to which we subscribe are in the library catalog:http://library.soka.edu/search/X and Choose "Periodicals" as the location.

In addition, you may browse the list of electronic resources by using the library website:http://kz4kf3yk5q.search.serialssolutions.com/

3. How do I find journal articles for my research papers?

To find newspaper, journal, and magazine articles, use one of the databases available through the library website. To view an alphabetical list  please visit:

4. How do I find items my professor has put on reserve?

You must obtain reserve items from library staff at the circulation desk in the Library. Tell us the name of the class and the title of the reserve items. To find out what material has been placed on reserve for you class, go to the library web page for reserves: http://ikedalibrary.soka.edu/srchelp_p.html

Journal articles are usually not kept in the Library. Angel would be the place to go.

5. What is the library policy for overdue materials?

You are responsible for returning materials by the due date, or renewing them on time. Because the university community shares our material, there are fines for late materials. For more information about overdue fines, please visit our circulation page at: http://ikedalibrary.soka.edu/circulation.html#fine

6. Can I renew my material online?

Yes you can! Materials may be renewed one time online. After that, you must bring materials to the library, so staff can check to make sure there are no holds placed on the material. To renew books online, go to: http://library.soka.edu/patroninfo/

You will need to type in your name and the number on the back of your student ID card.

7. What if I want a book that someone else has checked out?

If you need a book, which has been checked out by another library patron, you can ask the library staff to place a hold on the book, or recall the book. We do not recall books checked out by students, as the loan time is only three weeks. However, staff and faculty may check books out for longer periods, and we will recall those materials for you.

8. Can you just tell me who has the book, so I can ask them to use it?

No. Library staff follow very strict privacy guidelines. We do not give out any information about our borrowers for any reason.

9. I am not a Soka student or employee. Can I borrow material from the Library?

At this time, only students or employees of Soka University may borrow our materials. However, the public is welcome to use our collection during regular library hours.

10. How can I reserve a study room in the library?

Study rooms are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for Soka students, faculty, and staff. Use by non-Soka patrons is limited to the first floor room, and limited to an hour if others are waiting to use the room.
